Still Image
Brunswick and Topsham, Map #12
Maine Historical Society, Still Image

This is one of a collection of maps surveyed for the Pejepscot Proprietors to show boundaries and land ownership in the areas of what are now known as Brunswick and Topsham, Maine. Scale [1:35,640] 4.5 furlongs = 1 inch. During the years of the Pejepscot proprietors' efforts to settle their holdings, three of the Indian wars were fought: the fourth or Lovewell's War, 1722-1726; the fifth or King George's War, 1744-1748; the sixth or French and Indian War, 1754-1759. These conflicts delayed settlement of the Pejepscot Company's land, and their history is reflected in the documents in this collection.

Map # 52. Androscoggin and Kennebec Rivers
Maine Historical Society, Map

This is an early map of the area commissioned by the Pejepscot Company circa 1720. Scale [1:316,800] 1 inch = 5 miles. Surveyors commissioned to lay out the plots of land for the Pejepscot company often had to do their work in the middle of winter to avoid confrontations with Native Americans. During this period three Indian wars were fought; Lovewell's War, 1722-1726, King George's War, 1744-1748; and the French and Indian War, 1754-1759.

Rolling back the frontier
MPBN: Home Series, Moving Image, 0:26:45

In the 1600s, European settlers left everything they knew to take advantage of Maine’s abundant resources. Despite back-breaking work, a harsh climate, and cultural clashes, they successfully carved out a new life for themselves. But by the end of the century, most of them would leave Maine in fear and live for years as war refugees.

A Place Apart
MPBN: Home Series, Moving Image, 00:27:01

Maine is a place apart from the mainstream of American society. Beginning early in Maine’s history, settlers, merchants, visitors, artists, and writers brought images of Maine to the rest of the world that shaped the State's economy, identity, and heritage. The history behind the image of Maine remains a vital part of how we and those from away view Maine today.

Map
Plan of rivers of Saco and Kennebunk with sea coasts between them, 1731, Map #75
Maine Historical Society, Map

This early manuscript map shows a mill and river features along the Saco and Kennebunk rivers. Scale [1:63360] 1 inch = 1 mile. This map is part of the Pejepscot Proprietors' records. Map # 75 probably assigned later by John McKeen, Clerk to the Company. Early maps of the region now known as Maine often showed the location of mills. Mills which ground flour, or sawmills which processed building materials were the first industries to be established in these wilderness areas. Showing features of rivers was also important because people at that time travelled by river more than is done today.

A Part of the Main
MPBN: Home Series, Moving Image, 0:26:01

As Europeans began to look seriously towards Maine as a desirable economic region, there were many debates about who owned or controlled the varied and plentiful natural resources, especially timber. In the mid-1800’s, the timber harvest from the communities in the far north woods traveled via the river communities to the prosperous coast where the wealth of natural resources set sail for the world beyond. Today, these distinct regions remain intact, each with a different story to tell about how history has played itself out since that time.

Map
Plan of part of the Eastern Shore,1753, map 56-2-1
Maine Historical Society, Map

This manuscript map numbered 56-2-1 was created by Thomas Johnston in 1753 and shows the granted land on both sides of the Kennebec River, church buildings in Brunswick, Falmouth and North Yarmouth and the town of Norridgewock. Two compass roses adorn the map along with two men in the cartouche stating, "God hath Planted us here, God deeded this land to us." Great controversy surrounded this and subsequent maps created by Thomas Johnston showing land ownership along the Kennebec. This is considered the first Johnston map, 1753.
