Still Image
Jacking Deer
Maine Folklife Center, Still Image

Photograph of J. E. Smart and friends of Seboeis, demonstrating the method of jacking deer. J. W. Dearborn with rifle, George Hopkins holding lantern, and Joseph Emery Smart, Jr. paddling, Jacking has long been an illegal hunting method. It was practiced at night, and the deer was immoblized by the light from the lantern held by the man behind the shooter, and became an easy target. We know these men are only demonstrating the technique because the photograph was taken in daylight.
