Map | | Plan of Falmouth Neck, now Portland, 1690. Maine Historical Society, Map
This early map of the peninsula depicts the area as the English colonists settled it. It reflects the original name of the peninsula "Falmouth Neck" which was a part of Falmouth. Notice, though, that the title makes reference to the name "Portland," indicating that the map was actually drawn after the renaming of the peninsula in 1786. The map reveals a neck of land dominated by forests and swamps, which dwarf the early settlement.
