One sheet of payroll records from Penobscot Lumbering Association--includes number of days worked per man, amount paid to and owed to him, and his signature (or mark). Some of these men show a lack of ability to write, as evidenced by their lack of ability to sign their names. Instead, their names were written by a clerk and they put their X between first and last name.
