British Naval and Merchant Telescope, ca. 1850

Elizabeth Aageson of Portland owned this telescope, which was made in London, and that has a reference guide of different British merchant signal flags. Merchant ships flew signal flags representing their owners. Aageson loaned the telescope to the Navy's World War I campaign "Eyes for the Navy." The Navy asked for telescopes, binoculars, sextants and chronometers to help with the war effort. Attached to the telescope is a metal tag that reads "Donated to U.S.N. by Miss Elizabeth Aageson 436 St. John Street Portland Me. 1808.
